Broome – Sunsets, Dinosaurs, and Horizontal Falls

Camels, Beach and Sunset

We chose to stay at Cable Beach, which offers many good accommodation options, stunning sunsets and good local restaurants. Located only a short drive from the town centre, it is an ideal spot to stay for a few days or even longer. It feels like a resort and offers plenty to see and do.

The most famous activity is a camel ride at Cable Beach. Sunset is the most popular time, but other times are available throughout the day.

Seaplanes, Horizontal Falls and the Kimberley

My favourite day tour from Broome was the Horizontal Falls. My day started early, before sunrise, with a seaplane ride to the falls. It was about an hour’s flight with amazing scenery as the sun rose.

When we reached the Falls in the Kimberley region, the day improved even more. We enjoyed fast-boat rides through the falls and the surrounding scenery, which were simply stunning. We did the trip twice, once before and once after breakfast. There was also shark feeding and an opportunity to swim (away from the sharks).

Since my tour was half a day, it was then time to take a scenic flight back to Broome. The flight lasted 1 hour and 20 minutes, featuring a scenic route. From the air is the best way to see the remote Kimberley region.

There are several options: a morning or afternoon tour, or a full-day tour. The tour covers many highlights, and I have rarely experienced a nearly 2.5-hour seaplane flight just to enjoy the scenery. I highly recommend this tour if you’re visiting Broome.

Dolphins and Dinosaur Footprints

Broome is also known for the Australian snubfin dolphins and visiting whales. Australian snubfin dolphins are unique and different from other dolphins, and it is a good idea to join a dolphin-watching cruise if you can.

Around Broome, you can also find ancient dinosaur footprints preserved in rock for over 130 million years. Broome is recognised as one of the most important places in the world to see these prints. There are many tour options, including cruises with a walk-and-tapas experience that I enjoyed, as well as walking tracks and tours.

A perfect way to finish the day is with dinner while watching the sunset at Cable Beach.

Our travel tip: A rental car is the best way to get around, as there are not many taxis and Uber is not available. However, some resorts offer bikes for free or for a small fee. Some resorts even borrow a car for just a few hours if you want to visit the shops. As the supermarkets are in the main town, it is good to plan ahead, and we can help before you go.
