This July, I visited the northern part of Western Australia, known as the Kimberley. The region is vast, so careful planning is essential. Tours often include scenic flights via light aircraft or helicopters, as the areas are very remote.
Self-drive is a popular way to experience the region, but a 4WD is required if you plan to visit off-road and remote locations. The main access points are from Broome and Kununurra, where you can fly from Perth or Darwin. There are also flights connecting these two cities.
In the Kimberley, you will find ancient landscapes, wildlife, canyons, freshwater swimming holes and waterfalls.
Our top 5 tour recommendations in the Region are:
- Horizontal Falls
The Horizontal Falls tour features a scenic flight to the falls from Broome and a fast boat ride at the falls. It’s one of the top highlights of the Kimberley and highly recommended. The tide change creates this amazing natural phenomenon. It’s an easy half or full day tour from Broome. - Bungle Bungles
This UNESCO World Heritage site in Western Australia’s Kimberley region is famous for its 300-metre-high striped sandstone domes. Situated within Purnululu National Park, the best way to experience this natural wonder is with a scenic flight from Kununurra. - Mitchell Falls
Mitchell Falls is a ‘must-see’ during the Waterfall Season. Its staircase-like cascades are breathtaking, and the best way to experience them is through a scenic flight. It’s an easy day tour by helicopter from Kununurra. - El Questro
El Questro Wilderness Park, just a 60 to 90-minute 4WD drive west of Kununurra, features a breathtaking array of gorges, waterfalls, and thermal springs. It’s an easy full-day tour from Kununurra with 4WD transport. - Ord River and/or Lake Argyle Cruise
The most important water systems in the region offer stunning views and wildlife. There are several options from sunrise to sunset and is an easy tour from Kununurra.
Best time to visit is from May to September.
