Glowworms, Gardens and the Middle Earth
New Zealand’s North Island, with its diverse and stunning landscapes, is a sight to behold. We were fortunate to explore some of the most popular destinations in this awe-inspiring region.
Our journey commenced in Auckland, the vibrant heart of New Zealand. Our first destination was the innovative Weta Workshop Unleashed, nestled in Sky City. Whether you’re a devotee of the Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit movies, this is a must-see. The exhibition is not just informative but also interactive, inviting you to unleash your creativity and feel truly immersed.
In the afternoon, we set sail on a picturesque cruise in Auckland Harbour. The sun was radiant, the sky was a clear canvas, and the scenery was simply mesmerizing. From the deck of the boat, we were treated to breathtaking views of the Auckland landscape. The cruise also offers the chance to spot marine life, such as whales, dolphins, and a variety of bird species. It’s a perfect way to spend an afternoon and gain insights into the Auckland landscape and the diverse marine life that inhabits the harbour year-round.
The next day, we ventured to Waitomo Caves, where we explored two of the caves. The first cave, Raukuri Caves, may not be as famous as the others, but it’s a hidden gem worth discovering. As you descend through the stunning spiral entrance, you’ll be captivated by the unique beauty of the cave system. Here, you will see amazing limestone formations and glowworms from a close distance. The cave is solar-powered and, therefore, a sustainable option to visit.
The second Cave, Waitomo Glowworm Cave, is the most well-known and the only cave where you get to take a boat ride on the underground river. As you cruise along the river, you will see the glowworms creating the appearance of a starry sky on the cave ceiling.
If you’re seeking a more adventurous tour, consider trying Black Water Rafting in the cave. You’ll put on a wetsuit, float on the underground river, and admire the glowworms.
Our next stop is the beautiful Hamilton Gardens, located in the city of Hamilton. These gardens are not your usual botanical gardens. There are 18 individual gardens, each with its own unique theme. The gardens will take you on a journey from India to Egypt and from Maori gardens to an “Alice in Wonderland” style experience. We truly recommend stopping here for a few hours; it’s well worth it!
The last stop was the famous Hobbiton village. This village is known as the movie set for the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies, and it’s one of the most visited attractions in New Zealand. You don’t need to be a fan of the film to visit here. The landscape is breathtaking, and the tour is well-organised. After the guided walk through the village and visiting the Hobbit house, you will have a chance to enjoy a drink and lunch in a Middle Earth-themed atmosphere.
We can organise tours to Waitomo Caves and Hobbiton Movie Set from Auckland and Rotorua. If you are on a self-drive tour, we can add these attractions along the way. Let us know your preferences when we plan your trip.
