It was relaxing to know that someone else would take care of the logistics if the original plan changed.

The Great Barrier Reef offers unforgettable experiences
The Great Barrier Reef is a spectacular natural wonder that most people would love to see at least once in their lifetime. No wonder it has been listed as one of the seven natural wonders of the world and added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Great Barrier Reef is made up of around 3,000 coral reefs and 300 coral islands, and its large size means it can be seen from space.
If you’re into scuba diving or snorkelling, this is a must-see on your trip to Australia – and a visit to the reef is also a great way to start either of these activities. The Great Barrier Reef stretches for over two thousand kilometres along the coast of the Australian state of Queensland and is home to dolphins, whales, many species of turtles and a diverse array of fish. It is also home to rare and endangered species, such as loggerhead turtles.
Cairns, for example, is a good city destination for travellers who want easy access to the Great Barrier Reef. There is a wide range of accommodation and plenty more to see and do, including the rainforests of Daintree National Park.

A trip to the Great Barrier Reef is a great adventure
It’s convenient to get to the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns or via Port Douglas or Airlie Beach, for example. The reef is usually accessed by boat on guided tours and cannot be accessed independently. A day trip to the Barrier Reef is available, but longer boat trips are also available, where you can stay overnight, eat well and relax. Diving is also possible from the boats.
In addition to the sub-surface scenery, there are plenty of other beautiful things to see around the Great Barrier Reef. For example, the beautiful white-sand Whitsunday Islands! The Whitsundays are best visited by sailboat to get the most out of them, and offer a range of accommodation options from luxury nights to more relaxed bungalow cottages.
Other things to do
If boating or diving isn’t for you, you can also book a helicopter trip over the Great Barrier Reef to see the scenery from a whole new perspective. There are also a variety of walking trails near Cairns, and hiking trips to places like the Cape Tribulation rainforest are popular.
