When considering the Great Barrier Reef, we typically envision Cairns and Far North Queensland. Yet, only a four-hour drive or train ride from Brisbane opens up access to the southern region of the reef. In the hot summer months, the southern section of the Great Barrier Reef might be a better option than Far North Queensland, with milder temperatures and  waters that are free from marine stingers.

We set out to explore the Bundaberg region, famous for its Bundaberg Rum and Bundaberg Ginger Beer. Farming dominates the local industry, supplying 25% of Australia’s fruit and vegetables. Upon your arrival, the vast sugarcane farms stretch out as far as the eye can see.

Recently, numerous sugarcane farms have started planting Macadamia trees!  These famous nuts are native to Australia, with the region being one of the largest producers of Macadamia nuts globally. To learn more about the farming and Macadamia nuts you can join a guided tour of one of the farms.

The trip’s highlight was visiting the Great Barrier Reef. A quick 2-hour catamaran ride from the coast leads you to stunning reefs teeming with turtles, manta rays, reef sharks, and vibrant fish. It’s an ideal day trip, or, for a unique experience, you can spend a night on one of the reefs, “glamping” under the stars.

Alternatively, there’s an island resort accessible by a small plane, where you can snorkel directly from the beach to the reef. This region is renowned for its sea turtles, which nest on the beaches. There are distinct seasons for turtles, manta rays, and whales, so please inquire about the best timing when planning your trip.

Turtle hatching and nesting season offers tours to witness these events, but  asa wildlife experience, sightings can’t be guaranteed. The area is highly protected, and  rules govern beach access, typically closing it at night during the nesting season to make sure the wildlife is safe.

In Bundaberg, we also suggest joining a guided Indigenous tour that will not only reveal more about the region but also share stories from the past, present, and future.

Getting here is convenient – just a four-hour drive from Brisbane, a quick flight, or a comfy train ride. Let us know, and we’ll help you incorporate this into your itinerary.

A very well-organized trip to Australia and New Zealand. Thank you!

The concept worked perfectly for us:Peaceful vacation: We appreciated that it wasn’t a group trip. We were able to explore the destinations at our own pace, but the schedule and advance reservations gave the trip a clear framework.Reservations in order: All hotel and tour reservations worked flawlessly in principle.Safety net: When there were twists and turns along the way – such as flight cancellations – the office handled the situations for us nicely. It was relaxing to know that someone else would take care of the logistics if the original plan changed.

Asko Project Matka helped me plan and implement a wonderful holiday in Melbourne. However, in a relatively short time I managed to see a lot. Thanks to the useful tips I received from Asko. His local knowledge of Melbourne is in a class of its own. I can warmly recommend Project Matka if you are looking for a holiday in Australia!

A thousand thanks to Asko and Project Matka for the absolutely fantastic arrangements for our trip to central Australia. Everything went perfectly, and the experiences were one after the other. We asked for an active itinerary with hiking in stunning landscapes as the main focus, and that's what we definitely got. Other highlights included dinner under the stars, a camel ride at sunrise, and the light art installation Field of Lights. Warm recommendation to Asko and the Project Matka team.
